These two moments must complement each other. However, all teachers who have been involved in the work of mentoring and counseling and therefore have had to integrate courts for the evaluation of thesis at any level, know that sometimes you see “very beautiful stories, but very badly told ” You can see jobs that denote a job
arduous research, results with a great impact and contribution to science, but the wording is so complicated and defective that it makes understanding difficult, instead, the defense is carried out in such an eloquent way that it compensates for the deficient writing. From the above it follows that there must be correspondence between the scientific rigor of the writing and the oral presentation in the defense of work investigative.
In addition to the requirements of methodological order, must comply with the essential requirements in terms of novelty, current and originality in the treatment of the subject, its scientific basis and the possibilities of
introduction in practice as a contribution to the processes of change in the educational realities of the different countries.
Other aspects that should be contained in a general way in the thesis are:
- Extension of the limits of scientific knowledge in a specific area of knowledge.
- Demonstration of basic knowledge about the research topic.
- Critical evaluation on the bibliography and previous investigations.
- Appropriate management of research techniques, or the introduction of new techniques and procedures.
- Demonstration of the acquisition of novel criteria sufficiently argued.
Requirements for writing the thesis
The writing of the thesis must complete a group of requirements to achieve its understanding and elegance. In many cases, despite having relevant results, the way in which they are expressed does not make them comprehensible, or they are not scientifically based and this causes the quality of the research to be lost. Hence, in the writing of the thesis two types of requirements must be taken into account: the background and the form.
- Background requirements:
Unit: It is the harmonic principle of the parts with the whole. The unity in all theses is the harmony of all ideas, both main and secondary. The unit provides perfect agreement between problem, demonstration and conclusions.
Although several ideas are handled, there is one that is the fundamental idea, the basis of the investigation and the final object of the same. The other ideas are secondary or subordinate with respect to it.
Demonstration: The thesis must be demonstrated by the logical reasoning of the results through the processes of thought, each analysis carried out must lead to conclusions.
Depth: The thesis must penetrate the essence of the problem, should not be limited to its phenomenal qualities.
Originality: The thesis has as its object a demonstrable subject or one that has not been demonstrated. That is why an important quality of the thesis is originality. This is achieved by analyzing the attempts previously made by other researchers, or by the researcher himself, to solve the problem.
The following relationships should be demonstrated in the thesis:
- Problem – Object of study
- Object of study – Field of action
- Field of action – Objective
- Problem – Objective – Population
- Objective – Investigative tasks
- Research tasks – Research methods
- Problem – Objective – Scientific idea
- Research design – Structure of the thesis
- Objectives – Results
- Results – Discussion
- Objectives – Conclusions
- Conclusions – Recommendations
- Form requirements:
Laos integrate two basic components: the appropriate use of language. and the organization of the text. Some ideas on this are:
The language of the thesis must meet the following conditions:
It must be its own, appropriate to the object of study and to the science where the research is carried out. The applicant must show mastery of the terms used in the thesis, as well as the area of research where the thesis is developed.
Clarity is a vital element, writing must be accessible, explain with few words, and know how to illustrate difficult concepts to understand through examples or other forms. The syntax must be correct and the vocabulary to the readers, should not be used ambiguous words, vague, jargon, abbreviations.
The abbreviations should not be abused. When its use is necessary, it is advisable to say, for example: Primary Health Care (hereinafter APS). Sometimes the author considers that the generalized use of a certain acronym makes it sufficiently known. Anyway, it must be specified, since the results can be published and for another reader of another geographical situation it would be difficult to understand them.
The conciseness is the brevity in the way of expressing the concepts, that is the effect of expressing them correctly and synthetically.
An imprecision in the vocabulary can come from a stylistic negligence, from the author’s own inaccuracy of mind.
It should be written in a sober and measured style, never in the extremes, pompous or light.
Do not use pejorative expressions or excessive praise. The concepts and terms should not be exaggerated.
When synonyms are used to increase the richness of the lexicon, care must be taken that the word affine has the meaning that is sought and harmonized in the text.
?? The region, the country where the study is carried out, must be specified. On many occasions you can see jobs that say: in our province, in our country, which makes the reader have to look for other pages to locate the study area.
The organization of the text:
It must be written in an impersonal way, that is, in the third person of the singular, for example, instead of “my opinion is”, it must be said: “in the opinion of this author”, or “this researcher found differences with respect to the results obtained by such author in such place “. Sometimes they read jobs that pose: “we are going to present …”. It can be said: It is presented …
Write capitalized when necessary, without abusing its use.
All the quotes that are opened must be closed.
Do not write too many numbers with Arabic numerals, in the case of numbers less than ten, try to express them by their generic word.
Use Roman numerals when necessary
Be coherent with the initials, which are explicit in the first moment of their use in the text and if possible not abuse them.
Do not exaggerate underlining.
Alternate with prudence the numerals and the cardinals, the Roman numerals and the Arabic numerals.
The printed version must be reviewed in order to verify:
If there is a correct paging
If the quotes are quoted and referenced.
If the number of the notes corresponds to the reference and is correctly seen in the text.
If the bibliography is ordered according to the same Vancouver nor APA norm. It is common to see written theses with a mixture of norms.
If the bibliography has all the necessary information, either book or magazine article.
